Third Annual Ride For The Living

JCC Krakow Announces Third Annual Ride For The Living & Partnership With JCC Association

The Third Annual Ride For The Living will take place on Friday, June 3, 2016. Ride For The Living is a unique event where over 150 participants will cycle 55miles (90 km) from the iconic Auschwitz-Birkenau gate to the Jewish Community Centre of Krakow (JCC Krakow) and participate in four days of educational and community programs.

Ride For The Living honors the Holocaust while celebrating the renewal of contemporary Jewish life in Poland today. Ride For The Living will be led by Chief Rabbi of Poland, Michael Schudrich and riding next to him will be 81 year old Auschwitz Holocaust Survivor, Marcel Zielinski. The Jewish Community Centers Association of North America (JCC Association) is offering a satellite Ride For The Living program to JCCs around the U.S. for those unable to travel to Poland to participate.

Ride For The Living is an annual event under the patronage of Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich. “When Jews around the world consider Poland, they have an obligation to not only remember the past, but also to recognize the work being done to bring as many Jews here in Poland back to the Jewish people. The Ride For The Living is so important because Jewish life in Poland is flourishing a miracle considering antiSemitism
in Europe today. Jewish communities around Poland are growing, and while we acknowledge our loss as a people here, we must focus on the future,” explains Rabbi Schudrich.

Riders from the US, UK, Canada, Israel, Colombia, Ukraine, and Poland will tour AuschwitzBirkenau on Thursday, June 2; cycle the 55miles from Auschwitz-Birkenau to JCC Krakow on Friday, June 3; join the Jewish community of Krakow for a festive Shabbat dinner on Friday night after the Ride; and participate in 7@nite Night of the Synagogues on Saturday, June 4.

JCC Krakow is partnering with the JCC Association of North America which will offer satellite Ride For The Living program at 14 participating JCCs in June. JCCs will hold dedicated Ride For The Living spin classes where participants will cycle to support Ride participants in Poland while learning about the renewal of Jewish life happening in Krakow and across Poland.

Funds raised from the inaugural 2014 Ride supported a JCC Krakow Holocaust Survivors’ Mission to Israel. For most of these child survivors, it was their first time in Israel and their only opportunity to travel as a community. In 2015, Riders raised over $150,000 USD to launch new educational programs and support for medical and welfare services for JCC’s Holocaust Survivor members. The 2016 Ride For The Living will support ongoing programming for all generations in the community including Holocaust Survivors, students, and children.
